As a film photographer, having a well-thought-out kit makes all the difference, whether I’m shooting for a brand or creating personal work. Over the years, I’ve streamlined my essentials to make every shoot as smooth as possible,as well as keeping things light-weight.

Here’s what I always carry:
Film Camera: My go-to 35mm film camera (I personally tend to use Canon)
Backup Cameras: I always bring a 35mm point-and-shoot film camera as a backup, as well as a digital camera. On client shoots, having a reliable backup ensures I can adapt to unexpected moments.
Film Guard Bags: When traveling, protecting my film is a priority. Film guard bags shield film rolls from X-rays at airport security, so I never risk damage to my work.
Extra Batteries: I pack double the amount batteries than I think I’ll need, ensuring I’m covered for long shoots.
Colourful Tape & Marker: Colourful tape helps me label film canisters and organise which rolls I’ve used. I use a marker to jot down notes on the film, like the look I’m aiming for—especially helpful for fashion clients on set.
Rucksack with Compartments: A rucksack with multiple compartments keeps everything organised and easy to access while on set.
External Phone Charger: Shooting BTS content with my iPhone is a must, so I always carry an external phone charger to stay powered throughout the day.
20p Coin: My film camera requires a flat edge to unscrew the battery compartment, so I always keep a 20p coin handy.
Portable Music Dock: Music adds another layer to the atmosphere, helping models feel more at ease and get into character.
Water-Resistant Bum Bag: Perfect for quickly storing film rolls while on the move.
Diffuser/Reflector: As someone who shoots with natural light 90% of the time, a foldable diffuser/reflector is always in my kit to control and diffuse light.
Every item in my kit serves a purpose, helping me stay prepared no matter the location or situation. There's other film photographers that will have more in their kit, but it really is down to you, what type of the project you are shooting, your creative approach and ensuring you have the backups you need. I like to keep it simple as keeping things light-weight in my bags is important to me.
